Respiratory Protection from the Specialists
Powered Air-Purifying Respirators (PAPR) for Professional Respiratory Protection
PM Atemschutz is your specialized expert partner for powered respiratory protection. For more than 30 years, we have been supporting companies in selecting the most suitable powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) systems for applications in industry, chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, remediation, welding, and many other sectors.
We compare solutions from different manufacturers, take industry-specific requirements into account, and work closely with our customers to identify the optimal combination of PAPR unit, filter, and headtop for the specific application.
Our comprehensive service combines product selection, technical expertise, in-house service and maintenance, training, rental solutions, and product development capabilities to provide a true end-to-end respiratory protection solution.
The selection of a powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) should not be based solely on technical specifications. Airflow rate, battery runtime, weight, filter connection type, and alarm functions are all important considerations. What matters most, however, is whether the complete system performs reliably under real working conditions and is accepted by the users.
As a specialist in powered respiratory protection, we understand the industry-specific requirements of different applications as well as the practical advantages and limitations of individual systems from various manufacturers. We provide manufacturer-independent advice and work with you to evaluate and compare different solutions.
Our objective is not to promote a specific product, but to identify the most suitable respiratory protection system for your application. In doing so, we take into account factors such as:
- Type and concentration of hazardous substances
- Working environment and duration of use
- Physical workload of the wearer
- Required filter type and protection level
- Suitable headtops and respiratory interfaces
- Wearing comfort and user acceptance
- Maintenance requirements and spare parts availability
- Availability of consumables and replacement filters
- Options for rental, trial use, or product evaluation
What Is a Powered Air-Purifying Respirator (PAPR)?
A powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) is a battery-powered respiratory protection system. It draws in contaminated ambient air, passes it through suitable particulate, gas, or combination filters, and delivers the filtered air to the respiratory interface.
Unlike disposable filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) and reusable half masks, which rely solely on the wearer’s breathing effort, a PAPR actively supplies filtered air to the user. As a result, there is virtually no noticeable breathing resistance. This significantly reduces physical strain on the wearer and greatly improves comfort during extended use.
Because the blower unit is worn directly by the user, PAPR systems can be used flexibly across a wide range of working environments. When combined with loose-fitting hoods or helmet systems, there is generally no conventional wear-time limitation. In addition, the continuous airflow can provide a cooling effect, making long work shifts more comfortable.
Powered respiratory protection systems are also particularly well suited for users who wear beards or prescription glasses, provided that an appropriate loose-fitting headtop, such as a hood or helmet, is used. For these types of headtops, a fit test is generally not required, which can significantly simplify implementation and day-to-day use.
Depending on the configuration, respiratory, head, face, and eye protection can be integrated into a single solution. This enhances worker safety, improves ergonomics, and can contribute to higher productivity in daily operations.
PAPR systems are classified as air-purifying respiratory protection. This means they depend on the surrounding atmosphere and may only be used where sufficient oxygen is present and where hazardous substances can be effectively removed by the selected filter media.
Benefits of Powered Air-Purifying Respirators (PAPR)
- Reduced breathing resistance through active air supply
- Improved productivity by reducing breathing effort and physical strain on the wearer
- Enhanced comfort during extended periods of use

- Option to integrate eye, face, and head protection into a single system
- No conventional wear-time limitations when used with loose-fitting hoods or helmet systems
System Selection
The Right Solution Starts with the Right Combination
A high-performance powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) alone is not enough. Effective respiratory protection depends on selecting the right combination of PAPR unit, respiratory filter, breathing tube, and headtop.
PAPR Unit
The PAPR unit forms the technical foundation of the respiratory protection system. Depending on the application, different performance characteristics may be important, including airflow rate, battery runtime, filter options, alarm functions, ease of operation, headtop compatibility, and suitability for specific industries and applications.
For short-duration tasks, a lightweight and compact system may be the best choice. For extended use, multi-shift operations, or demanding industrial environments, robust systems with long battery life, reliable performance, and strong spare parts availability are essential.
Respiratory Filters
Filter selection must always be based on the specific airborne hazards present in the workplace. Depending on the application, particulate filters, gas filters, or combination filters may be required.
Particulate filters protect against dusts, fibres, fumes, and aerosols. Gas filters are designed to protect against specific gases and vapours. Combination filters provide protection against both particulate and gaseous contaminants.
Selecting the correct filter is a critical safety consideration. That is why we work closely with you to determine the most suitable filter type for your application while also taking manufacturer-specific filter connection systems and compatibility requirements into account.
Headtops and Respiratory Interfaces
The choice of headtop plays a key role in determining the level of protection, wearer comfort, and overall user acceptance. When used with a powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR), possible respiratory interfaces include hoods, helmets, visors, full face masks, half masks, welding headtops, and protective suits.
A headtop designed for pharmaceutical manufacturing must meet different requirements than a system used in steel production, welding, or remediation work. For this reason, we always evaluate the complete respiratory protection system rather than focusing solely on the PAPR unit itself.
Our recommendations take into account industry-specific requirements for eye, head, face, and hearing protection, as well as the expected duration of use and the required assigned protection factor (APF) of the complete system.
System Selection
PAPR Systems from Leading Manufacturers
PM Atemschutz offers powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) systems from a range of leading manufacturers, because no single system is equally suitable for every application. Different industries, workplace environments, and user requirements call for different solutions. By comparing systems from multiple manufacturers, we help you identify the most appropriate respiratory protection solution for your specific application.

ATEX-Certified PAPR Systems for Hazardous Areas
In hazardous areas, respiratory protection systems are subject to special requirements. Only powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR) that are approved and suitable for the respective hazardous area classification may be used. These ATEX-compliant PAPR systems are commonly used in the chemical industry, paint and coating applications, cleaning and maintenance operations, and facilities where flammable gases, vapours, or combustible dusts are present.
ATEX-certified PAPR systems must not only provide reliable protection against hazardous substances but must also be designed to ensure that they do not become a potential ignition source. Key considerations therefore include the appropriate equipment certification, correct filter selection, suitable respiratory interfaces, and a thorough assessment of the specific workplace conditions.
PM Atemschutz supports you in selecting the right PAPR system for hazardous areas. Together, we evaluate which solution best matches your application, risk assessment, and hazardous area classification. We also consider compatible headtops, filters, consumables, maintenance requirements, and product availability.
Below you will find a selection of available PAPR systems for use in hazardous areas.
